Photoshop offers many techniques for removing an unwanted background from an image. However, using the standard Magic Wand tool to select and delete the background may be sufficient for a simple background.
For more complex background changes you can remove the background using the background eraser tool, removing the background from a complex photograph can be difficult, especially if the object you want to separate has a lot of hair or the background is very complex. In this article, we’ll walk you through removing a background from a photo using Photoshop to help you overcome that challenge.
How to delete a photo background in Photoshop?
Despite the many advances in Photoshop over the past few years, removing a background from an image has never been easier or faster. The key to getting the best results with the best technology for the type of image you’re working with is knowing how to use the best methods.
Here are five ways to remove the background from your photos using Photoshop services, and use each technique to get the best results.
Delete Background with Photoshop Quick Actions
When best to use: You’re doing it for yourself, you need it fast, and you’re definitely not looking for perfection. It is best to use high contrast between subject and background and when the subject is reasonably straight. Built-in Photoshop Quick Actions are the fastest way to remove backgrounds in Photoshop. It’s new in Photoshop 2021 (Creative Cloud Subscription) and provides a quick way to remove backgrounds. It comes with speed but less accuracy. Depending on your image, Photoshop Quick Actions will do most of the work for you, but the results may be less than you expect. If you feel so, you can use any of the methods described here for your development.
Steps:
1. Open your image with Photoshop, right-click on your background layer and click on Duplicate Layer. Next, name your layer (whatever you want) in the dialog box that pops up and clicks OK. Then, click the icon to the left of the primary layer to close that layer.
2. Make sure your Properties panel is open by going to Window > Properties. (If you’ve already checked it out, it’s unnecessary to click it; if it’s not yet reviewed, click it to open it on the right by default.)
3. Now in your Layers panel, click on New Layer. Then, click the Remove Background button under Quick Actions in the Properties panel (by default, it should show up at the top of your Layers panel).
4. Quick Action removes the background, leaving your layer with a mask around the subject.
From here, you can make any refinements by going to the mask and making adjustments as needed.
Delete background eraser tool
When to use: It works with high-contrast images; However, it takes considerable time and effort to produce a good result. The Background Eraser tool is good if you need a little more control over the deleted background, but still, Photoshop wants to do some of the heavy liftings for you. For more power, you need to sacrifice some more time to get the desired results. Depending on your image, using the background eraser tool can be very efficient and time-consuming and even close to your desired results over time.
Steps:
Open your photo with Photoshop, right-click on your background layer and click Duplicate Layer. Next, name your layer (whatever you want) in the dialog box that pops up and clicks OK. Then, click the icon to the left of the primary layer to close that layer.
Select the Background Eraser tool by choosing the toolbox on the left. The device may be hidden under the Eraser toolbox. Eraser Tool A process to extract more options and choose Background Eraser Tool.
In the Tool Options bar at the top of the screen, click the Brush icon to highlight the Brush panel.
Change the Hardness so that it is up to 100%.
Whatever size you think is appropriate for the image you are working with. In this regard, we will start it at fifty pixels.
You can fix this by using square brackets ( [ and ] ) to decrease and increase the size of the brush.
At the top of the Tool Options bar, set Sampling to Continuous. This is the first option of three icons in the form of a brush. Then, set a limit to find the edges and keep the tolerance somewhere in the 20-25% range.
Note that the lower the tolerance, the greater the color variation. On the other hand, the greater the tolerance, the more two colors one can choose.
4. Start erasing the background around your subject using the background eraser tool by clicking and holding while moving the brush. The goal here is to prevent the cross-hairs from touching your subject inside the device. Zoom in on the photo if you need to see more close details.
I suggest you make a small stroke with the brush tool (remember the problem of letting go of the mouse from time to time) since you can always undo the brush if it goes too far.
For more complex areas, you’ll find that you need to change the size of your brush as you go. You can adjust the size of your brush up and down by adjusting the top tools options bar or using [ and ].
If resizing the brush doesn’t work and erases your subject, undo your action, go to the top of the tool options bar, adjust the pattern at once (the middle icon of a set of three), and limit the separation and tolerance to 10. % This allows the brush to use the color under the cross-hairs at that moment and not resample as you go along.
Depending on the type of image the process can be quick or tedious but yields good results, as you are in control of what is subject and what is not. If that doesn’t work, the other methods described here can help you get closer to your desired results
Background deletion with the pen tool
When to use: Subject and background are not too conflicting. Other tools like Photoshop Quick Action or Background Eraser tool mentioned above are not giving desired results. The Pen Tool gives you the most control of all the methods described here.
The Pen Tool is the most tried and true way to remove background from photos in Photoshop and gives you excellent control over the results. However, it is more rewarding for better results, but it is the most time-consuming and requires high patience.
Steps:
1. Open your image with Photoshop, right-click on your background layer and click on Duplicate Layer. Next, name your layer (whatever you want) in the dialog box that pops up and clicks OK. Then, click the icon to the left of the primary layer to close that layer.
2. From the Toolbox, select the Pen Tool on the left (above the Text Tool). Zoom in on any part of your photo to get started. Choose a starting point on the edge of your subject (or a suitable starting point) and click to start the first anchor. Then start working on your topic by adding additional anchors to start outlining your topic.

Imagine your photo subject surrounded by a completely different background — one that you designed from the ground up using your imagination. Before you can place your subject in a completely new landscape, you must first remove the background of the original image. Background removal is a complex art and requires more than just the eraser tool, but you don’t have to be a graphic design whiz to learn the steps in Adobe Photoshop CC.
Step 1
Open your image in Adobe Photoshop. To remove the background, select the ‘Quick Selection Tool’ from the Tools panel. (Don’t see the ‘Quick Selection Tool’?’ It can be nested with the ‘Magic Wand Tool’). Selecting ‘Quick Selection Tool’ opens a context-sensitive menu at the top of your workspace. Before you begin, select ‘Add to selection’. You may need to open the ‘Brush Picker’ and increase or decrease the size of the brush depending on the size of your image.
Step 2: Remove the background image with a selection
When the tool is ready, click and drag your mouse over the unwanted background. A group, or selection, of marching ants, will appear and grow as you click and drag. Gradually work around your subject and add selections as you go.
Sometimes, you may find that some areas are added to your selection that you don’t want to include. Hold down the ‘Alt’ or ‘Option’ key to toggle the subtract mode for the tool, and then click and drag your mouse around the background area you want to remove. Release the ‘Alt’ or ‘Option’ key when you are ready to add your selection back. Alternate between addition and subtraction modes as you work.
Zoom in closer to work on difficult areas that include both background and subject. Tip: Small details, like shoelaces, don’t need to be included. But reducing your brush to 1px can help capture the tiniest details.
Once your topic is completely within a selection, you’re ready to move on.
Step 3: Refine the edges
When the selection is complete, right-click within the marching ant and select ‘Refine Edge’ from the pop-up menu. Refined Edge will help you fine-tune your preferences for better benefits. First, change the View Mode to ‘On White’ or any option that contrasts sharply with your selection. Doing this will help you see the areas of your edge that need the most help
Increase the smooth value slider to soften your favorite jacked particles under the exhaust edge. You may need to adjust additional sliders but smoothing will help the most. Click OK when finished.
Step 4: View your selection on a new level
Your final step is to review your results. Right-click within your selection and select Layer by Copy. Your selection will assign itself to a new layer, without background, without editing your original photo
Toggle the visibility of your original background layer to see your entire piece against the original image.
Removing the background of an image is the first step to composting success. With the background removed, you’re ready to use your own creativity to create a new environment for your subject.
